Of course, there are times when the Greek article functions much like an English definite article, indicating that the noun or substantive is a particular one, not just any one. However, more of its functions revolve around the broader role of identifying some person, persons, thing or things. The outer circle portrayed the most general and overall use of the Greek article, conceptualizing. The next smaller circle, inside the largest circle, represented the article's function of identifying. So all articles conceptualize, but not all identify. Lastly, the smallest and most inner circle illustrated the function of definitizing (such as where the article is used as a definite article). So not all identifying articles definitize, but all difinitizing articles identify. Again, all the functions of the article involve conceptualizing. That is, an article packages a word or phrase with it, and makes this package into a noun or concept. Then some (but not all) articles also identify whatever might be packaged with it. That is, these identifying articles delineate or set apart some person or thing from all other persons or things, though it does not necessarily identify as a specific and particular one. Finally, within this area of identifying functions, there is an even smaller group of functions which definitize. In other words, this smallest group of functions will indicate that the article identifies whatever is packaged with it as a definite reference to a particular and specific one. Overview of Article Functions. The semantic categories below normally involve the use of a Greek article in a way which adds additional meaning to a noun or substantive. And each category is determined by examining the context, not the structure of the grammatical construction — since most semantic categories involve the same construction (which is simply ARTICLE + NOUN) and are thus structurally identical. But the use of an article in each different semantic category will contribute something different to the meaning and interpretation of the noun following it. An example might be the semantic category of an anaphoric reference, where the article indicates that the following substantive refers to another previously mentioned substantive. In providing this service, the article contributes to the meaning by helping the reader to associate the two substantives with each other, thus assists the reader in combining all the information about both substantives into one package. Naturally, this leads us to another problem. Identifying an anaphoric reference, or any other semantic inference, is one thing. But conveying its additional implied meaning into a smooth idiomatic English translation is another matter entirely. Since Greek communicates its ideas and concepts in an entirely different way than we do in English, with a completely different set of semantically packed grammatical constructions, idioms and expressions, we often need to write a very literal and verbose translation, possibly even with explanations in footnotes, in order to get across the full intended meaning. After all, there is usually no fully equivalent English grammatical construction, idiom or expression that we can readily use to replace a Greek one. And this is often true regarding semantic categories of the article. The structural categories are those where an article is used to create an identifiable grammatical construction. Naturally the construction or structure often will be used to add some kind of additional meaning to the words as well, possibly with a very particular semantic inference. But the function is identified by the way certain kinds of words form a particular kind of recognizable grammatical construction. An example might be where a nominative article is used with the particle . In this particular construction, the article serves in the role of a personal pronoun and as the subject of a clause or sentence — but usually as an anaphoric reference too, where it points back to a proper noun, noun or substantive which is the . It should be remembered that a Greek article can be classified into more than one category. In fact, an article can serve more than one function, and can often fit into more than one semantic category, at the same time, especially if one semantic category is a subset of another. The intense headache lifted but a dull ache lasted for days, I felt extremely tired and by the time it came to Friday the last thing I felt like was going to a wedding dinner and toasting with water all night, but that’s exactly what I did. I must have consumed about two and a half litres of water that evening, on top of the two litres I’d had already that day – blame the toasting. Still, I had a really good time, enjoyed long chats I can subsequently remember every word of, and left before it got to the stage of listening to the same conversation over and over again with friends who weren’t drinking water. Weekend 1. Something happened on the Saturday morning. I woke up full of energy, feeling happy and excited about the weekend ahead. This is what people rave about I thought smugly. But no. Sunday I had gone back to feeling tired again. And I really struggled over the weekend to manage to drink the three- litre quota every day. It’s fine in the office, where I spend hours sitting at a desk with a glass of water within reach. But on the go at the weekend, it’s hard to fit in drinking all that water as well. Not to mention making sure I always had access to a toilet when out shopping, walking in the park and on public transport. Week 2. Halfway through the second week, I was feeling very bloated. Was it the water I wondered? Or was it the fact I appeared to be eating like a horse; the water – far from filling me up and reducing my appetite, like it’s apparently supposed to – seemed to be making me feel even more hungry. It was hard to resist the stack of biscuits and chocolate that are a permanent feature of the Good Housekeeping web desk. And I was still feeling tired. Weekend 2. By the end of the week I was bloated, fat, tired and miserable, my skin was just as dry, my hair just as frizzy, and my clothes were cutting uncomfortably into me. I did a weekend birthday party on two and a half pints of water and a herbal Jasmine tea and warned everyone of the dangers of a water diet. I was just looking forward to it being over to be honest. But despite the fact it was being such an endurance test to get to the end of week three, and despite the fact I had only planned to try the experiment for three weeks, at the end of the week I decided I would carry on for one more week to see if I would feel any better. Forcing yourself to do something obsessively, whether it’s drinking water or cutting out sugar, will not automatically make you feel better. There are of course more expensive options such as an under the sink filter that filters from the mains and comes via its on tap, such as Reverse Osmosis - these whole house filters and distilled water filters are investments worth every penny! This means that you can cook and wash all foods with amazing water! Although they are fluids they are not hydrating drinks, in fact most of these are dehydrating and are causing stress! The flavoured drinks are unfortunately sweetened with artificial flavours, sugars and sweeteners that are again stressful and not hydrating! Stick to the real stuff.. Fizzy water contains carbon dioxide and as we know that is what the body needs to get rid of so why would you want to put it back in again? In that case, I certainly would not recommend carbonated water to be the main water that you are drinking, occassinally it woul not hurt you to drink it but too much may make you pop! If you start to drink 2 litres immediately, from not drinking any, it may make you feel sick and unwell as your body will go immediately into a detox and cleanse by releasing lots of toxins that will make you feel unwell.
